James 4:14 —May 6, 2012
James 4:14—You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
I have talked with thousands of people concerning their eternal destiny. Most of them say, “I’m not going to die anytime soon.” But not one of us has a guaranteed contract that promises we’; see the sun rise tomorrow. “Do not boast about tomorrow,” the Bible warns, “for you do not know what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1).
The Choice Is God’s
Some Christians practice a deceptive game of religious denial concerning the inevitability of death. On many occasions I have seen Mr. and Mrs. Cheerleader walk into a hospital room and say to a terminally ill patient, “Praise God! This is the day you walk out of here!” Even worse are such cruel, ignorant and unscriptural statements as, “If you were in the will of God, this wouldn’t be happening to you.”
Get it straight: God heals but He doesn’t choose to heal every time. Jesus walked up to the pool of Bethesda, surrounded by sick people waiting for an angel to stir the waters so they could plunge in and be healed. Jesus healed one man who was unable to step into the waters—and then slipped away into the crowd (John 5:1-16). God is sovereign. He may choose to heal someone, or He may choose to receive him or her into His glory. The choice is His, not ours.
