John Hagee

The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God.

Most of us are familiar with this passage of Scripture from Exodus 34:26, but what does it really mean?

I’m sure you have read Matthew 6:33; “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Firstfruits is exactly that…putting God first in time, order and importance.

Do you want to climb the stairway to success, to personal prosperity? And no, I’m not just talking about financial prosperity, though that can certainly be part of God’s plan for you. 3 John 1:2 tells us that God wants you to prosper in all things, even as your soul prospers. He wants you to prosper in your health, your finances, your relationships, even your happiness. Our God wants you to prosper and succeed in anything you put your hand to. God’s blessings will overtake you when you put Him first in all things.

Conversely, if you ignore the law of firstfruits, you may experience lack in the areas of your life that concern you the most. This intentional decision to put other things in your life before your relationship with the Lord is affecting your family, your business, your personal relationships – and corporately as Christians, our unwillingness to put God first as a nation is effecting our future as a whole.

Why do we encourage each other to go to church? We gather together as Believers at the beginning of a new week because we want to worship the one true living God and symbolically put Him first in our lives and in our week. When we make church a priority, it’s part of giving our firstfruits for the week. Your pathway to success begins in your times of prayer and worship!

I want to encourage you to be faithful attenders and supporters of your local church. Make church a priority for you and your family. There is no better way to set the course for your week than to gather together with fellow Believers and give praise and honor to the Lord.

Putting God first in your life establishes His Lordship. If He is not first, He is not Lord. If He is not Lord there is no blessing, no favor. There can be no true prosperity in your life if you

have chosen to put something else before your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to be first? First means preceding all others in time, order and importance.

When your desires, your plans and your ideas become more important to you than God’s plan, you have adopted the attitude of self-sufficiency. When you seek after your own ambitions you are challenging God’s authority over your life.

The Scriptures warn us that Satan comes to kill, steal and to destroy (John 10:10). The Good News is that Christ came to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). Many of the disciples had the wrong attitude. Peter had a selfish attitude when he told Jesus that He didn’t need to go to the Cross; they would take up their swords and defend Him. What was Jesus’ response? “Get thou behind Me, Satan” (Matthew 16:23).

How do you know if you have the wrong focus and attitude? It’s very simple. When you refuse to put God first, when your will is not God’s will…your attitude is controlled by Satan.

If you are feeling slighted and wondering, “What about me, what about my rights?” Guess what? You are most likely not putting God first place in your life. We are called to be servants of the most High God. You were bought with a price. When we feel slighted or mistreated, our first response should be to; “bless and show kindness to those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:28).

Only when you put God first in your life are you able to respond to others in the way He would have you to respond. When you are obedient with giving Him your firstfruits, you make it possible for the Lord to “open the windows of heaven and pour out blessings on you that you cannot contain.” (Malachi 3:10). Your obedience is what activates the power and promises of God. When you put God first, He is able to provide what He promises in His Word. And God never breaks a promise.

In the Old Testament, animals that were considered clean (oxen, goats, sheep, pigeons and turtle doves) were sacrificed as the firstfruits to bless those that remained. According to the Old Testament law, the first born was either sacrificed or redeemed. There was no other option. Every time one of your livestock delivered its first born, you were to sacrifice it or redeem it unto the Lord.

Jesus was God’s only Son. He had to be sacrificed or redeemed. God allowed His Son to be sacrificed for the sins of the world. And it is because of this sacrifice that we can experience a personal relationship with God and receive the gift of eternal life. (Romans 6:23).”

If you do not give God what is rightfully His, you will never experience the fullness of God’s presence and joy in your life. When you don’t put the Lord first, you reject the blessings that God has in store for you.

Are you giving the Lord the firstfruits of your labor? Because what you do with the firstfruits determines what happens with the rest of your harvest. Would you like your finances to be blessed, to be running over and filled with God’s favor? Then be sure to honor Him with your consistent and generous tithes and offerings.

If you are not making God first in all things in your life, it’s time to get your house in order. Our God is an awesome God, and He is worthy of all our praise and adoration.

It is our hope and desire to help you put God first in every area of your life. If you follow the principle of firstfruits, and make a commitment to keep the Lord first in your life, you will find yourself living a life filled with the good things of the Lord. This doesn’t mean you will never encounter a problem, but it does mean that He will walk with you through every storm and He promises to bless you in ways you cannot even imagine.

Seek ye FIRST the kingdom!
