At times in our lives, God asks to do things that we just don’t want to do. He wants us to follow His lead, replicating the childhood game of Follow the Leader. Do you remember that one?
God asks us to be childlike, to have faith like that of a child. He is not asking us to be childish and pursue our own path. He has set before us a path of righteousness, but many times we decide to take a detour. We no longer want to follow the Holy Spirit. We begin to act childish. (And there is a definite difference between childlike and childish.)
We are brought into this world as children at an appropriate time and in an appropriate way. We go through many stages of life, and after a certain amount of time, we leave our childish ways behind us...but we never want to lose the wonder of childlike faith, of following Christ down an unknown pathway.
On Saturday mornings at my house, I love to cook breakfast. Sometimes I cook pancakes and sausage with eggs and cream gravy dripping over hot biscuits. Sometimes I cook tacos with chorizo con huevo, papa con huevo, chilaquiles and machacado. I love to cook for my family, but you may not eat at my table until you are dressed and your bed is made.
I have learned that if it can be fed, it can be trained. My five-year-old daughter can make her bed. It doesn’t look like the Ritz Carlton, but at least the pillows are back where they are supposed to be. So, my son who is older and wiser, a little bit taller... ought to be able to do things like take out the trash, wash the dishes, clean the floors and help to make our house a beautiful retreat, instead of simply watching us do all of the work all of the time.
When you’re childish, you don’t appreciate others. When you’re childish, you don’t have much to and use your emotions to control others. It’s childish when you don’t share the goodness of God in your life with others.
Stop complaining! If you’re breathing, you’re having a great week...and God has a plan for you! Try complimenting others for the blessing that they are in your life. God has so many great things to offer, if you are only ready to follow His lead and stop acting so childish.
Let God ignite the childlike heart that is within you. Let Him dissolve the doubt that has been holding you back. Allow the all-consuming fear to dissipate in your life as you make Him the Lord and Master of your universe. Don’t be afraid of what the future holds, because you know Who holds the future.
In life, we often face situations that are difficult. Sometimes we can become bitter, feeling as if we can no longer trust people. The childlike heart is going to say, “God, I trust in You! I believe in You!” He wants you to put your life in His hands.
We have a Father that we can trust. He created heaven and earth, and He delights in every good thing that comes our way. He has never failed us, never left us behind. He wants to provide our every need. Are you listening? Are you seeking Him with your whole heart?
God sees what you are going through. He knows the giants you are facing. He is telling you that if you will follow Him, He will lead you down paths of righteousness...all the way to total victory! Keep your eye on the prize. He will scatter your enemies, taking you places that you never dreamed of. It’s time to trust the Lord and follow the Leader!
When we played Follow the Leader as children, all we did was get in a line and follow the kid who was leading the line. The leader determined how far we could go. If the youngest child in the yard was our leader, we didn’t get very far at all. We didn’t do anything too fancy. If the oldest child was the leader, sometimes the experience was horrifying. The leader was the limitation for the group. We could only do what they decided that we could do.
WHAT DID JESUS TELL US IN MATTHEW 16:24? “THEN JESUS SAID TO HIS DISCIPLES, “IF ANYONE DESIRES TO COME AFTER ME, LET HIM DENY HIMSELF, AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS, AND FOLLOW ME.” IF CHRIST IS IN THE LEAD, THERE IS NO PLACE THAT YOU CAN’T GO.
You might have to walk through some uncomfortable places and walk through a desert or two, before you enjoy the mountaintop experience... but if He is in front of you, then all things are possible to those who believe!
